Cadillac Resort District and its surrounding area have plenty of land for everyone to find a piece to set up their temporary blind or construct one from natural materials.

Here are just a couple of areas that you might want to check out:

• Manistee National Forest: Spanning thousands of acres of NorthWest Michigan, the Manistee National Forest may offer you the largest area of hunting opportunity. You can get a map of the public land at the Forest Service’s Cadillac office at 1755 S. Mitchell St., Cadillac, MI 49601 or by calling 1-800-821-6263.
• Long Lake Area: 8 miles NorthEast of Cadillac is the Long Lake Campground and surrounding state land. Large portions of this land are open to public hunting.

Beyond public hunting areas, there are also large farms located to just a few miles East and SouthEast of Cadillac. If you find a farmer in a good mood and ask nicely, you just might be able to get permission to hunt some of that land.

1. Manistee National Forest and Michigan Lakeshore. 3 hours. Head west on M 55 toward Manistee. The Manistee National Forest will provide all of the scenic beauty you are seeking. Just north of Manistee, M 55 meets M 31. Take M 31 north a few miles to M 22. The drive on M-22 along the Lake Michigan lakeshore is amazing any time of the year, but is truly spectacular in the fall. In Frankfort, a great town to grab lunch and take some time to stretch your legs, M 22 meets M 115. Take M 115 south east. The drive will take you through more great Michigan countryside and bring you right back to Cadillac.
2. Manistee National Forest and Grand Traverse Bay. 5 hours. Head northwest on M 115. This portion of the trip will take you through a small portion of the Manistee National Forest and some other scenic Michigan landscape. In Frankfort, take M 22 north. The highway winds its way along the Lake Michigan shore and through more National Forests all the way to Grand Traverse Bay and Northport before following the shore of Grand Traverse Bay back to Traverse City. On the north side of Traverse City, take M 37 south. M 37 will take you through more Manistee National Forest all the way to M 55. Take M 55 east back to Cadillac.

Fall says he joined the Cadillac West Association to make  difference in the decisions that affect the community.

The family has owned Bruce Helsel Tree Farms, a landscaping and tree removal service for many years, as well as being involved in the Christmas tree business. They opened the market as a place to sell the Christmas trees and other nursery items. The business has grown from there.

The 13th Street Market currently has 10 employees including 5 who have been with the market since it opened.

The Helsels’ say location is key for their business, and they enjoy supporting the community.

Many events and specials are planned for the business in the coming months including a “yard sale” and hiding goons in the trees.

“We are definitely fairing better than most businesses in this economy,” says Bob. “It is a combination of things: customization and fresh food.”

In the 10 Subways Bob and Troy employ approximately 50-60 people.

“I see a lot of potential in the area,” commented Bob.

Programs are offered throughout the week, including laser shooting, geo-caching, kayaking and fishing.

The gift shop sells a nice selection of nature and Michigan books as well as shirts and gifts.
